But I'll Just Screenshot it...
Today's topic is not a fun one, but it should be discussed.
I have heard a lot of people think they can just "screenshot" an image they like and use it, print it, share it, whatever they want, even if it has a big logo on their face. I'm truly not sure why people feel as though it is ok to take someone's work (and livelihood) and do what they want with it. I have seen a lot of school photos online - used as profile pictures, etc. with the big word "COPYRIGHT" on it.
I'm not sure why people think that is ok? It is basically saying, hey look world, I stole this and didn't pay for it. You wouldn't go into a store and steal something from their walls would you? You wouldn't go into an art store, take out your phone and snap a picture of something and then go print it would you? So why is it ok for that to be done with photography? Do you think it costs nothing for a photograph?
There is the photographers time and talent (most of the time they make below minimum wage when cost of doing business is figured in), there is the time it takes to process the photograph and the cost of printing, materials, etc. Or if it is digitals you want, than it's the cost of maybe a website for you to download or a USB. Photographers incur a lot of expense, cameras, lights, backdrops, insurance, taxes, websites, advertising, ongoing classes, etc. So when you just take a screen shot you are stealing a livelihood from a photographer.
Here is a notice of copyright that I give all my clients - more as an educational tool because a lot of people have just don't know what a copyright is. This is provided by the PPA (Professional Photographers of America).
